Webinar 1- Composting blue residual materials for valorisation

Webinar 1- Composting blue residual materials for valorisation

04/03/2024
The first webinar in MARIGREEN brought together 18 participants, who could enjoy presentations informing about the making of compost from marine ingredients (seaweed residues, fish, and mussel residues), how such compost may be applied as a substitute for peat in growing media, and how to make compost tea which may be used as liquid fertiliser/biostimulant. Ingeborg Korme, the coordinator of the BlueBio H2020 ERA-NET Cofund program and Marianne Areng, the co-coordinator of the Sustainable Blue Economy partnership, both from the Research Council of Norway, attained the webinar and presented the possibilities for further funding of relevant research and innovation activities.

The presentations will soon become available on this website.

Sigbjørn and Anne-Kristin visit at the fertilizer factory "Grønn Gjødsel"

04/03/2024
On February 7, 2024, Sigbjørn L. Tveteraas (NORCE) and Anne-Kristin Løes (NORSØK) were welcomed by the director Lars Evju to visit the fertilizer factory “Grønn Gjødsel” in Rakkestad, Norway. Several ingredients, such as sanitized poultry manure, meat-and-bone meal, potassium sulphate and dried blood are mixed at the plant to produce pelleted fertilizer for certified organic growing. Residues from the marine sector would be interesting to test as ingredients, provided they can be delivered at a reasonable price.

The experience considers the effect of applied fertilizers on the proper growth and development of lettuce. "Significant amounts of fertilizers applicable in organic growing are required to achieve 25% organic farmland in the EU by 2030, as proposed in the F2F strategy.

The response of lettuce seedlings, from the research experience of the MARIGREEN project, to the attack of yet unidentified pests (possibly 𝑃𝑖𝑒𝑟𝑖𝑠 𝑟𝑎𝑝𝑎𝑒 and 𝑇𝑟𝑖𝑎𝑙𝑒𝑢𝑟𝑜𝑑𝑒𝑠 𝑣𝑎𝑝𝑜𝑟𝑎𝑟𝑖𝑜𝑟𝑢𝑚).

The research experience, developed within #USAMV, considers several experimental variants: variant E (conventional fertilizer product was used) and variants B and C (residual materials from the BLUE sector, of which many are currently poorly utilized, treated with appropriate technology and applied in agriculture GREEN sector) and variant M (control).

As it can be seen in the photo, the plants from variants B and C do not seem to be affected by the attack of the pest, which gives the possibility that the biofertilizers used have increased their immunity and resistance against diseases and pests.

We will verify statistically these assumptions and return with the final results of our research.

Stay tuned.

SOFIE2 presented a great opportunity for #Marigreen project

26/01/2023
SOFIE2 presented a great opportunity for #Marigreen project to connect to people in the organic fertilizer industry and to learn about policy initiatives and market outlook. The European organic fertilizer market is a key for valorizing marine residuals. EU regulations and initiatives aim to harmonize and create a unified European market for organic fertilizers. There are many opportunities and challenges ahead. Knowledge of regulations, complementarities with mineral fertilizers, supply and demand factors, quality and environmental requirements will help to identifying market opportunities for organically-certified fertilizers based on marine residuals. We were grateful to meet and talk to Jessica Fitch of ECOFI and many others in the summit.

Norwegian Centre for Organic Agriculture (NORSØK) is a research institute established in 1986 to support the organic sector in Norway by conducting relevant research (R), development (D) and dissemination activities.

Composting of seaweed residues with N-rich blue materials such as fish and mussel residues, and extracting the compost to possibly derive new products with fertiliser and biostimulant effects, will be core activities at NORSØK. Our main focus has been to develop fertilisers applicable in organic growing, derived from marine residual materials such as fish bones and algae fibers. Trials have shown significant and positive effects on the growth of field crops.

MARIGREEN partners participated in the beginning of April to an internal e-coffee meeting on BlueBio Cofund Human Capacity Building

14/06/2022
The first objective of the meeting was to promote Human Capacity Building (HBC) in BlueBio co-funded projects, having analysed their reporting on HCB in the mid-term reports. Some examples of HCB initiatives within projects were presented, and discussions about the HCB efforts already done (or planned) by the projects and their challenges, and for facilitating the exchange of best practices took place.

In the second part of the meeting, attendees had the opportunity of considering different forms of assistance that BluBio Cofund could deliver about HCB to the funded projects (e.g. support in the organization of training courses, workshops, webinars, etc.), taking into account their needs. Issues about communication and sharing of HCB among BlueBio projects were also addressed. The meeting was insightful and sparked a lot of ideas and opportunities for the BlueBio Cofund team as well as for the project coordinators. (https://bluebioeconomy.eu/bluebio-cofund-news/).
