SOFIE2 presented a great opportunity for #Marigreen project
26/01/2023
SOFIE2 presented a great opportunity for #Marigreen project to connect to people in the organic fertilizer industry and to learn about policy initiatives and market outlook. The European organic fertilizer market is a key for valorizing marine residuals. EU regulations and initiatives aim to harmonize and create a unified European market for organic fertilizers. There are many opportunities and challenges ahead. Knowledge of regulations, complementarities with mineral fertilizers, supply and demand factors, quality and environmental requirements will help to identifying market opportunities for organically-certified fertilizers based on marine residuals. We were grateful to meet and talk to Jessica Fitch of ECOFI and many others in the summit.

#WhoWeARE – meet our partner Norsøk
24/10/2022
Norwegian Centre for Organic Agriculture (NORSØK) is a research institute established in 1986 to support the organic sector in Norway by conducting relevant research (R), development (D) and dissemination activities.
Composting of seaweed residues with N-rich blue materials such as fish and mussel residues, and extracting the compost to possibly derive new products with fertiliser and biostimulant effects, will be core activities at NORSØK. Our main focus has been to develop fertilisers applicable in organic growing, derived from marine residual materials such as fish bones and algae fibers. Trials have shown significant and positive effects on the growth of field crops.

At #DTUAqua Federica Carboni and Godwin Abakari hosted our colleague Ivan Liviano from #Alumichem as part of the HCB in the #Marigreen project. We learned how to increase dry matter content of fish sludge using an innovative lignocellulosic filtration system. Also we standardized our water analysis methods for the coming trials. The obtained fish sludge cake will be evaluated as a fertilizer.

24/10/2022
Joshua Cabell presented our project #Marigreen during the annual festival called "Research Days" (Forskningsdagene) arranged by the Research Council of Norway. At least 200 people stopped by to learn about how we are experimenting using marine residues as fertilizer by direct application and by composting first.

#WhoWeARE – meet our partner UPB
14/06/2022
University POLITEHNICA of Bucharest (UPB) was founded in 1818 and is the oldest engineering school in Romania.
The UPB team will use the #biochar prepared in previous projects as a support for #impregnation. The aim is to develop, using relevant impregnation technologies, a well-balanced biochar-based #fertilizer for various purposes in organic horticulture. Our expertise is in experimental study and modelling of transfer phenomena in unit operations and (bio)chemical processes, e.g., biomass pretreatment, pyrolysis, extraction, anaerobic digestion and fermentation.

#WhoWeARE – meet our partner AUTh
14/06/2022
Aristotle University of Thessalonki is the largest University in Greece. The Lab (representative of Greece in #MARIGREEN project) elaborates synthetic and physicochemical studies pertinent to organic-antioxidant-bioactive compounds in blue biomass waste, chemical and biotoxicity profiling of derived extracts as fertilizers and biostimulant-bearing enhancers of plant growth. Our experience is in the study of hybrid inorganic-organic biological systems, biochemical engineering and molecular biology of organic, naturally occurring compounds, active in bacterial, plant and human (patho)physiologies.

MARIGREEN partners participated in the beginning of April to an internal e-coffee meeting on BlueBio Cofund Human Capacity Building
14/06/2022
The first objective of the meeting was to promote Human Capacity Building (HBC) in BlueBio co-funded projects, having analysed their reporting on HCB in the mid-term reports. Some examples of HCB initiatives within projects were presented, and discussions about the HCB efforts already done (or planned) by the projects and their challenges, and for facilitating the exchange of best practices took place.
In the second part of the meeting, attendees had the opportunity of considering different forms of assistance that BluBio Cofund could deliver about HCB to the funded projects (e.g. support in the organization of training courses, workshops, webinars, etc.), taking into account their needs. Issues about communication and sharing of HCB among BlueBio projects were also addressed. The meeting was insightful and sparked a lot of ideas and opportunities for the BlueBio Cofund team as well as for the project coordinators. (https://bluebioeconomy.eu/bluebio-cofund-news/).

Our partner at NORSØK (Norway) ended up in the nrk TV news!
14/06/2022
"In a small warehouse at the Norwegian Centre for Organic Agriculture, a mixture of algae fiber and dried fish residues is poured into a machine. Both are waste that would otherwise have been sent for combustion. Hidden inside the waste, there is something valuable. Fish bones contain large amounts of phosphorus, an element used in fertilizers that is becoming a deficiency."

The Danish partners are evaluating the use of fish faeces as a fertilizer
28/05/2022
The Danish partners #DTUAqua #Alumichem at the Marigreen project are evaluating the use of fish faeces as a fertilizer. For this we have collected the fish faeces from a Danish trout organic farm Mønsted-Bryrup (#Musholm) and with an innovative lignocellulosic filtration system we managed to produce a fish cake that will be shipped to our partners in Romania #USAMV and Greece #AUTh for elemental analysis and evaluation as fertilizer.
